What is the mission of Midwest Salute to the Arts?

Midwest Salute to the Arts is a nationally recognized art festival held in Southern Illinois. Their goal is to bring the love of art to community members in a fun and interactive way.

How did you get involved with Midwest Salute to the Arts?

When I moved here six years ago, I wanted to find ways to be part of the community. One thing I am passionate about is art, so what better way to grow my roots in the community and support my passions than to get involved with Midwest Salute to the Arts.

In what ways do you volunteer in the community?

I am currently on the board of directors and serve as the treasurer for Midwest Salute to the Arts. I also played a role in Associated Bank’s involvement and sponsorship of the Children’s Gallery. It’s a great way to increase awareness of our company and provide volunteer opportunities for our colleagues who graciously help bring the arts to children during the three-day annual festival each summer.

Additionally, I serve as president for the Metro East Chamber of Commerce. It’s been a great business development opportunity and introduction to other areas of the community. That has led to my involvement with organizations such as the Southwestern Illinois Building Trades, Illinois Center for Autism and more.

What do you feel is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

The most rewarding part is seeing how your small efforts come together and impact the community. The last two years were very challenging for the performing arts community with many events and fundraisers cancelled. To be able to secure funding and plan a safe event despite the challenges was one of the most rewarding parts of my volunteer career. It was a smaller event, but the artists were so thankful for our support. It’s a great way for our community to be able to come together.

How do you feel volunteering has changed you as a person?

I see the importance of doing good and helping others who are less fortunate. I was raised in a family that volunteered regularly and that’s a value I am passing onto my children as future leaders in our community. We often volunteer as a family and my children talk about what a great time they had or thank me for providing the experience.

What have you learned about your community?

The community, especially our youth, need art. It’s a great form of expression for developing minds—some of whom are really talented. I work directly with the community, schools, artists and other partners to ensure art materials, galleries or other experiences are available in our community.

Can you share a memorable experience as part of your involvement?

As part of the Midwest Salute to the Arts event, each artist donates two pieces of art to the children’s gallery. The kids walk through the gallery unguided, pick out a piece that speaks to them, and then have the opportunity to speak to the artist who created it. Many of the kids come back year after year to catch up with their artist. It means a lot to help youth understand the different types of arts and provide them with opportunities to interact and spark their interests.

What advice would you give other colleagues looking to start volunteering?

Volunteering helps you make connections personally and professionally, and no matter the amount of time you’re able to give, it will help make someone else’s life better. If you are looking to get involved, volunteerism is a great way to start.
