Merrill, Wis. - July 6, 2012 - Associated Bank's Main Street Merrill location celebrated 10 years in the Merrill community by donating $400 to the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery Veterans Memorial.
The branch hosted a celebration commemorating the bank's appreciation for its customers and community. Those who attended were invited to participate in a drawing to win prizes and a silent auction featuring donated gift baskets from local businesses. All donations and proceeds went to benefit the Francis Xavier Cemetery Veterans Memorial.
"Associated appreciates the generosity of our wonderful customers and the Merrill community who assisted in providing veterans with the recognition they deserve," said Jo Waltenberg, Branch Manager at the Merrill branch location. "We are pleased to be a supporter of the Veterans Memorial."
"Father Mike McLain of St. Francis and the Merrill community are very thankful for organizations like Associated that support the efforts to create a veteran's memorial for the men and women who served or are currently serving," said LeRoy Fischer, Representative for the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery Veterans Memorial. "The donation will help in making the memorial a beautiful and honorable place for veterans from Merrill and all over the nation."
The site of the memorial is located on the southeast end of the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Leroy Fisher, a veteran, initiated the project and approached Father Mike McLain of St. Francis and soon after the plan for a veteran's memorial developed.
Land was donated from the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery where the memorial garden is being constructed with a monument, bench, memorial tiles, flags and cannon that was given Mayor D.B. Reinhart by Congressman A.P. Nelson in 1920. Additionally, in an area around the memorial, 135 burial plots are being reserved specifically for veterans and their spouse.
For more than 50 years, Associated has supported numerous local Merrill community organizations through in-kind support, including the Merrill Area United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Haven and the Lincoln County Humane Society.
