The industrial revolution of the 18th century kick-started the transformation of society from agrarianism to industrialization, and the urbanization of the population followed. In the U.S., the Eisenhower freeway system in the 1950s began to shift housing out to the suburbs, in large part creating the model that many regarded to be the American dream: a house in a safe neighborhood, with a yard, good schools, 2.3 children and a dog. Apparently nobody explained this to Generation Y.
